Draw Power: A More Balanced Look At Drawing Cards

Post #1 by ~?~ » Sun Jan 12, 2020 7:14 pm

NOTE: BEFORE USING THIS CARD, PLEASE READ THE RISKS OF USING IT AND HOW TO USE IT

THE CARD: https://www.duelingbook.com/card?id=1228884

Shard of Greed
Normal Spell Card
Effect: Add 1 "Emerald of Greed" from your Deck to your hand or banish 1 card from your Deck face-down. When a card or effect is activated that would draw a card(s): Add this card in your GY to your hand and if you do, for the rest of the duel, if 3 or more "Emerald of Greed" are in your GY, you lose the duel. If this card and 2 other "Emerald of Greed" are in your GY, except during the turn that an "Emerald of Greed" was sent to your GY (Quick Effect): You can shuffle this card and 2 other "Emerald of Greed" in your GY into your Deck; draw until you have 5 cards in your hand. You can only use 1 "Emerald of Greed" effect per turn, and only once that turn.

Here we have Emerald of Greed. This card has a more powerful draw effect than any card that exists in the official game today, but it's not easy to use. Emerald of Greed allows you to draw cards until you have 5 cards in your hand, so at worst, you'll draw 1 card, and at best, you'll draw 5 cards. This isn't something you can just use right away, it takes setup. The card is graceful in its power house draw power, but it is easy to shut down this card for the rest of the duel.

How to properly use a card like this:

When you activate Emerald of Greed, always get another Emerald of Greed from your Deck, until you have gotten your 3rd copy of the card. After getting the 3rd copy, banish a card from your Deck face-down to put the last copy of Emerald into your GY. Since you cannot use it's draw effect during the turn an Emerald was put into the Graveyard, you'll have to wait until your next turn to use the effect to shuffle all 3 of them into your Deck from your GY to draw cards until you have 5 in your hand. Since you can't use its effect to draw cards the same turn you set up the effect, you don't have to worry about if the card enables OTK's and FTK's. It has 0 reliability for consistency boosts to your Deck when it comes to the first turn, other than thinning your Deck 1 card (assuming you do not draw all 3 in your opening hand).

The Risk

Emerald of Greed has another card effect that is mandatory (not option), so if the condition takes place to trigger its effect, you MUST activate the effect as it is not an optional "you can" effect. When Emerald of Greed is in the GY, and either player would activate a card or effect that would either draw cards or add cards from the deck to the hand (for example: Pot of Greed, Reinforcements of The Army, etc), then you must add "Emerald of Greed" from your Graveyard to your hand, but you cannot add more than 1 to your hand this way per turn, as Emerald of Greed states that you can only use 1 of the effects of the card per turn, and only 1 time that turn. So if you have 3 Emerald of Greed in your GY and your opponent activates Pot of Greed, you will add 1 of those Emerald of Greed back to your hand, and the other 2 Emerald of Greed will stay in the Graveyard. If this effect activates and resolves, then, for the rest of the duel, you'll no longer be able to use the effect of Emerald of Greed to draw up to 5 cards because for the rest of the duel, if all 3 Emerald of Greed are in your Graveyard, you'll lose the duel immediately. What all this implies is that while the effect to draw 5 may be extreme on paper, your opponent can completely stop your ability to use this effect simply by drawing a card or playing a single search card, creating a drawback to the card that is equally as bad as the draw power is good.

This Risky effect doesn't have to be a risk to you however, you can also use this effect to return to the hand to add a free +1 to your hand whenever you draw cards or add cards from your Deck to your hand with card effect (or if your opponent does), which will allow you to use it for different discarding costs and effects, kind of like Sinister Serpant but in a Spell Card.
