Archetype Concept: Ferronyx

Post #1 by MRed19 » Sat Jul 22, 2023 8:37 pm

Archetype Name: Ferronyx

Attribute: Earth

Playstyle: XYZ based (Earth), Focuses on using Earth monsters to XYZ Summon, also has destruction protection with the Continuous Spells and Traps. Most, if not all Ferronyx Monsters can be summoned in Face up Defense Position by sending an Earth Monster to from your hand the GY. This is very similar to Venuslyph, I’m aware. The constant discarding can empty your hand quickly if you're not careful, so be careful.

Strengths: It’s an Earth Machine Deck, ergo, it can mix with other Earth Machines and succeed fairly well. Several of the same spells and Traps that Earth Machines use (Urgent Schedule, Iron Call, Crusher Run) can be used here. One major benefit is the lack of any Archetype lock on them, meaning you can mix them with some other Earth Decks to support them. Also, they hit REALLY HARD. They have searchers, and their GY set up is good.

Weaknesses: They can be a bit unfocused sometimes, despite having many different effects, they don’t exactly fix the main problem I was seeing during the review, lack of focus. Also, the fact that their monsters are summoned in Defense position means that they really can’t do OTK with their base monsters, and often have to rely on their Extra Deck monsters to deal most of their damage.

The boss monsters are the XYZ Monsters Ferronyx Steel Drake (Rank 4 XYZ monster), Ferronyx Osmium Ouroboros (Rank 8 XYZ) and finally, Ferronyx Terminal DragOS (Rank 10 XYZ). Has a final XYZ called Ferronyx World Breaker Dragoon (Level 11 XYZ).

Some grammar and wording issues you might wanna fix, first and foremost:

Special Summoned is always capitalized.

You need a colon : after "When this card is Normal or Special Summoned" to indicate that activation condition, not a comma.

Discard isn't capitalized unless you're starting a sentence with it.

You usually use the number 1, not the word one, when referring to any specific number of cards, so it's "discard 1 card" not "discard one card".

You need a semi-colon ; after Ferronyx Bismuth Basher's "discard 1 card" cost to indicate that it's a cost, if it's a cost. This goes for your other activated effects with costs.

When referencing archetypes in effects, you surround the archetype name with quotation marks like "this".
This means you say:
"Ferronyx" Spell/Trap
not:
Ferronyx Spell/Trap

You no longer need to include "directly" when making an effect set/activate a spell/trap from the deck/graveyard, so you can just say:
activate 1 "Ferronyx Alloy Foundry" Field Spell from your Deck.
instead of:
activate one Ferronyx Alloy Foundry Field Spell directly from your deck.

Deck is always capitalized.

You include the name of the card whose effects you're making hard once per turn, so you need to say:
You can only use each effect of "Ferronyx Bismuth Basher" once per turn.
not just:
You can only use each effect once per turn.

In fact, when giving a monster multiple effects, all of which are hard once per turn, you should usually, if possible, break up those effects using bullet points and line breaks to make the text easier on the eyes. So instead of wording your effect like this:
When this card is Normal or special summoned, you can Discard one card, set one Ferronyx Spell/Trap from your GY onto your field. If this card is sent to the GY by card effect. You can activate one Ferronyx Alloy Foundry Field Spell directly from your deck. You can only use each effect once per turn.
I'd word it like this:
You can only use each of these effects of "Ferronyx Bismuth Basher" once per turn.
● When this card is Normal or Special Summoned: You can discard 1 card; Set 1 "Ferronyx" Spell/Trap from your GY.
● If this card is sent to the GY by card effect: You can activate 1 "Ferronyx Alloy Foundry" Field Spell from your Deck.

Also, when making effects set cards from graveyards, you usually don't need to specify that you're setting it "onto your field" unless it can steal an opponent's card to set to your field. Otherwise, you can just say "Spell/Trap from your GY" without including "onto your field".

Attributes are written in all caps, so you say "EARTH monster" not "Earth Monster". Also, you don't capitalize "monster" here when using that word right after an attribute.

Attack Position and Defense Position are always capitalized. "Battle Position" however, I'm not entirely sure, as the modern official Konami cards usually capitalize it while a few very old official cards don't. I usually follow the most modern capitalization. So I don't capitalize battle position unless starting a sentence with it or something.

The effect "You can Special summon this card from your hand in Defense position by discarding 1 Earth Monster" should have parentheses around "from your hand" to indicate that it doesn't activate; so it instead reads:
You can Special Summon this card (from your hand) in Defense Position by discarding 1 EARTH monster

When this card is Special summoned this way
can be shortened to:
If Summoned this way

You don't capitalize all of XYZ when referring to anything Xyz-related — just the X. So you say "Xyz Summoned" not "XYZ Summoned". This goes for Xyz Monster and Xyz Material as well.

Summon, Summoned, and Summoning are all always capitalized.

Target isn't one of those words you always capitalize. You don't capitalize Target unless starting a sentence with it or something.

You don't capitalize higher in "Level 5 or higher".

Material, when being used by itself, isn't capitalized unless you're starting a sentence with it. So if you're referring to Fusion Material, Synchro Material, Xyz Material, or Link Material, those are capitalized, but material by itself isn't capitalized.

Quick Effect is always capitalized.

Trigger effects are not, and do not become, quick effects, so you need to remove the "this is a quick effect" clauses from:
If this card is XYZ Summoned, You can detach 1 material from this card to Target 1 monster your opponent controls, change it to face down defense position, this is a quick effect if you detached an Earth Monster.
as well as those other monsters with trigger effects.

Ferronyx Terminal DragOS should probably be nerfed from:
You can XYZ summon this card by detaching one Material from an Earth Machine XYZ Monster (Transfer its Material to this card) While this card has Material, it is unaffected by card effects, except Ferronyx cards. Once per Chain (Quick Effect) When your opponent activates an effect(s) that targets one of your cards, you can detach materials from this card, negate those card(s) effects until the end of this turn. When this card is destroyed by Battle while it has material, you can Special summon any Non-XYZ Monsters attached to this card in defense position. You can only use the second effect once per turn.
to:
Once per turn, you can also Xyz Summon "Ferronyx Terminal DragOS" by detaching a material from an EARTH Machine monster you control, then using that monster. (Transfer its materials to this card.) While this card has material, it is unaffected by activated non-"Ferronyx" card effects that target no cards. Once per Chain, when your opponent activates an effect that targets a card in your possession (Quick Effect): You can detach 1 material from this card; negate that effect. If this card with material is destroyed by battle: You can target any of the monsters that were attached to it when it was destroyed; Special Summon them in Defense Position. You can only use this effect of "Ferronyx Terminal DragOS" once per turn.

The "transfer materials" thing on these kinds of monsters with these alternate summoning conditions, is usually its own sentence, not part of that same sentence regarding the alternate summoning condition. Other than that, being that easy to get out while having complete immunity to all card effects outside its own archetype, while having 3000+ ATK/DEF making it also difficult to defeat in battle, is probably broken.

You don't include the apostrophe when writing the possessive form of its. Usually you do include apostrophe, followed by S, when writing possessive forms of words, but "its" is the exception to that grammar rule. "It's" with the apostrophe is an abbreviation of "it is".
So you need to say "Transfer its materials" not "Transfer it's materials".

Activated isn't always capitalized, and isn't capitalized unless starting a sentence with it. Also, that Ferronyx Alloy Foundry field spell needs to increase the monsters' ATK by their original DEF, not just their DEF. This helps prevent any sort of infinite loop where this field spell increases ATK based on DEF while another card increases DEF based on ATK, increasing them indefinitely.

Ferronyx Transmutation needs to specify which monster it's attaching the card to. It can't just say "Special Summon one Ferronyx XYZ Monster from your GY and attach one Monster on your side of the field as Material".
I assume you intended for it to attach to that xyz monster in question, so you should say so.
Also, I see no need to begin that quick-play spell's effect with "when this card is activated" since you will, by default, do what quick-play spells say to do without them specifying that you have to activate it first.

I think Ferronyx Secret Spikes should inflict a set amount of damage, such as 500 or something, instead of damage equal to "the destroyed monster's level x200"

There's no such thing as activating something in response to an effect. You must be referring to activating in response to an effect activation, so you should shorten Ferronyx Crush Trigger's effect from:
When an Opponent activates a card effect on the field in response to one of your Ferronyx Cards effects, you can activate this card, negate that effect, then send that card to the GY. If you control a Ferronyx XYZ Monster, you can activate this card from the hand.
to:
When an opponent activates a card or effect in response to your "Ferronyx" card or effect activation: Negate that effect, and if you do, send it to the GY. If you control a "Ferronyx" Xyz Monster, you can activate this card from your hand.

Ferronyx Living Metal's current wording is too awkward in my opinion. It should be changed from:
When this card is Activated, Once Per turn, when a monster would be sent to the GY for a Special Summon while you control an Earth XYZ Monster, you can attach the sent Monster(s) to your XYZ Monster as material. When this card is destroyed by card effect, you can add one Ferronyx Spell/Trap from your GY to your hand, except Ferronyx Living Metal. You can only use each effect once per turn.
to:
When this card is activated: You can target 1 "Ferronyx" Xyz Monster you control; this turn, while this card is face-up on the field, any monster sent to your opponent's GY is attached to that target instead. You can shuffle this card from your field or GY into the Deck, then target 1 "Ferronyx" Spell/Trap in your GY; add it to your hand. You can only use this effect of "Ferronyx Living Metal" once per turn.
