Deck Spotlight: Popeye The Sailor Man

Post #1 by UberTrainerMinusInfinity » Tue Feb 28, 2023 10:20 pm

POPEYE THE SAILOR MAN
https://www.duelingbook.com/deck?id=12572655
Year of Origin: 1929, as part of Thimble Theatre.
Is it real?: Yes
Ace Monster: Popeye The Sailor Man
The Main Races: WATER
The Main Attributes: Warrior
Extra Monsters: None
Attack: Spinach/5
Defence: 5/5
Strategy: 2/5
Intellect: 2/5
Luck: 3/5
THE STORY:
He's strong to the finish, because he eats his spinach, he's Popeye The Sailor Man! *toot toot!*
STRATEGY:
Rather than being a full archetype, Popeye and his three support cards serves as an offensive core for WATER Warrior decks. Popeye The Sailor Man can't be removed from the field at all unless he is switched to defence position, but only has 2000 ATK. He can take out most level 4 monsters and tank removal effects (negation cannot stop him either) but against higher ATK monsters, he will struggle.....
....Until he eats his Spinach. Once you activate Spinach and pay half your LP, Popeye becomes the most overpowered monster in the entire game, balanced only by the fact that any damage he inflicts to your opponent becomes 1000. His ATK becomes so high it makes a Blue-Eyes White Dragon feel like a Thousand-Eyes Idol, he can attack up to five times on the turn he eats his Spinach, he becomes completely immune to all other card effects, he negates all your opponent's cards, and when he attacks, he destroys all Spell/Trap cards your opponent controls!
The other two support cards are specialized in searching Popeye and making sure you live long enough to draw the Spinach. Thimble Boatyard can search out Popeye The Sailor Man and makes you take less damage from battles involving WATER Warrior monsters, while Bluto's Bluff mills your deck whenever you take damage, thinnening it and making it easier to draw the Spinach, and can also revive Popeye The Sailor Man should he be destroyed, rendering him immune to his one weakness in the process: Changing battle position!
KILLER COMBOS:
There are'nt that many WATER Warrior monsters that can synergize with Popeye, but luckily, Elemental HEROes Bubbleman, Liquid Soldier, Ocean, and Absolute Zero all go well with each other, able to wipe out targets that Popeye can't get rid of until you draw the Spinach! Adding in King Of The Swamp grants you access to Elemental HERO Mariner for a quick direct attack and Elemental Hero Mudballman to stall until you get the tools you need!

Well, Christen57 is possibly on DeviantArt but I decided to take his Place Temporarily and If there's any I made any Mistakes, He'll fix them for me.

This card cannot be negated. Pay half your LP, then target 1 ''Popeye The Sailor Man'' you control: For the rest of this turn, any damage it inflicts becomes 1000, also apply these effects until the end of this turn:
● The targeted monster's ATK becomes 1,000,000,000, it is unaffected by all other card effects, it cannot be targeted by card effects, it can attack up to five times per turn, and when it attacks, destroy all Spell/Trap cards your opponent controls.
● If this was activated during your turn: negate the effects of all cards your opponent controls.
You can only activate 1 ''Spinach'' per turn. If this would enter the GY, instead shuffle it into your deck. You can only activate this effect up to a maximum of 5 times per turn.

You can only activate 1 ''Spinach'' per turn. If this card is in your GY: You can shuffle it into the Deck. You can only use this effect of "Spinach" up to Thrice per turn.

Thimble Boatyard can go from this...
When this is activated: You can add 1 WATER Warrior monster from your deck to your hand, then if you added ''Popeye The Sailor Man'' this way, you can excavate the top 5 cards of your deck, then place them on top of the deck in any order. You take 1000 less damage from battles involving WATER Warrior monsters. Whenever a WATER Warrior monster attacks, your opponent cannot activate cards from their hand for the rest of this turn.

Keep in mind Christen's got a VERY SIMILAR DECK

Who knew that the owner of the other Popeye deck was none other than Christen57 himself? Anyway, these changes are now live on Duelingbook.....even if they were made by james123! But the only notable change here is the ATK change granted by Spinach, and the fact that Bluto's Bluff now banishes the top 5 cards of your deck face-down, with you no longer choosing which cards were banished.

I forgot one detail on "Spinach" where it says "five" should be replaced with "5". and Yes, I'm like the Director Dipthong to Christen's Major Monogram

Nice work, but this effect can be shortened even further than that, from:
You cannot Summon monsters, except WATER Warrior monsters. This effect cannot be negated. Cannot be destroyed by card effects, except it's own. If this card is in Defense Position; Destroy this card.
to:
You cannot Summon, except WATER Warrior monsters. If this card is in Defense Position, destroy it. Cannot be destroyed by other cards' effects.

  • The effect preventing itself from being negated isn't necessary in my opinion, though that's not your fault
  • You don't need to include "monsters" when writing a "You cannot Summon" effect unless you're listing specific monsters you "cannot Summon," which you're not in this case
  • The effect to destroy itself if it's in defense position should have a comma, not a semi-colon
  • When using the word its as a possessive noun, you don't include the apostrophe between the it and the S. Normally for most singular words you would include an apostrophe following by an S, but the word it is one of the exceptions, so you would use its in this case. https://prowritingaid.com/its-vs-it-s

I think the effect preventing itself from being responded to is unnecessary, but aside from that, you made some more mistakes here.

  • You don't need an "a" between Cannot be activated as and Chain Link 2 or higher
  • UberTrainerMinusInfinity has a habit of quoting card names with double apostrophes ' instead of regular quotation marks " and Popeye The Sailor Man's name with the former — they must be quoted with the latter. When I first started reviewing his customs I overlooked this myself because we're obviously not used to people making obscure mistakes like that
  • That colon : right after "you control" should instead be a semi-colon ; to indicate that paying the LP and targeting are both done before any player gets a chance to chain to the effect, and then the "For the rest of this turn" after that should be lowercase, not uppercase, because semi-colons don't split sentences.
  • That colon right after "apply these effects until the end of this turn" should instead be a period, as you don't use a colon when indicating effects to "apply" since, by that point, you're no longer "activating" anything, and colons are normally used to indicate activation requirements
  • Spell/Trap cards can be shortened to Spells/Traps when not referring to Spell/Trap Card activating
  • Thrice isn't capitalized unless you're starting a sentence with it

Here's how I'd shorten that effect:
During the Battle Phase: Pay half your LP, then target 1 "Popeye The Sailor Man" you control; this Battle Phase, it is unaffected by effects except its own, any battle damage it inflicts becomes 1000, its ATK becomes 20,000, it can make up to 5 attacks this Battle Phase, the effects of all Spells/Traps your opponent currently controls are negated, also each time it attacks, at the start of the Damage Step: Destroy all your opponent's Set cards. You can target any number of cards in your GY including this card; shuffle them into the Deck. You must control a WATER Warrior monster to activate and resolve this effect.

Whenever a WATER Warrior monster attacks, your opponent cannot activate cards from their hand for the rest of this turn.
to this...
When this is activated: You can add 1 WATER Warrior monster from your deck to your hand, then, if you added ''Popeye The Sailor Man'', you can excavate the top 5 cards of your deck, then place them on top of the deck in any order. Reduce any battle damage you take involving a WATER Warrior monster by 1000. If a WATER Warrior monster attacks, your opponent cannot activate cards or effects during the Damage Step only. You can only activate 1 "Thimble Boatyard" per turn.

This effect looks too weak. I would instead buff it to:
If this card is activated: Add up to 1 WATER Warrior monster each from your Deck and GY to your hand, and if you do, you can shuffle any number of cards from your GY into the Deck, or from any GY(s) if this effect added 2 "Popeye The Sailor Man" to your hand. You can only activate 1 "Thimble Boatyard" per turn. You cannot Summon the turn you activate this card, except WATER Warrior monsters. Negate the effects of all monsters your opponent controls while their total ATK is less than the lowest ATK you control. For your Rank 5 WATER Warrior monster's Xyz Summon, you can treat Level 4 or lower monsters you control as Level 5 monsters for material.

Bluto's Bluff could go from
Whenever you take damage: You may banish up to 5 cards from your deck face-down. You can send this card from the field to the GY, then target 1 WATER Warrior monster in your hand/GY: Special Summon it, then if you Special Summoned ''Popeye The Sailor Man'' this way, while it is on the field, it cannot change it's battle position. At the start of your turn, you must pay 500 LP (This is not optional) or this card is destroyed.
to
If you would take damage by battle or card effect: You can banish the top 5 cards of your Deck face-down instead. You can send this card from the field to the GY, then Special Summon 1 WATER Warrior monster from your hand/GY, then, if you Special Summoned ''Popeye The Sailor Man'', Neither player can change it's battle position. Once per turn, during your Standby Phase, you must pay 500 LP (this is not optional), or this card is destroyed.

This can be shortened further to:
If you would take damage while a WATER Warrior monster is on your field or GY, you can banish the top 5 cards of your Deck face-down instead. For your Rank 5 WATER Warrior monster's Xyz Summon, you can treat Level 4 or lower monsters you control as Level 5 monsters for material. You can send this card to the GY, also you can target 1 WATER Warrior monster in your GY; Special Summon that target (if any) from your GY and/or 1 WATER Warrior monster from your hand, and if you do, you can draw cards equal to the number of "Popeye The Sailor Man" Summoned this way. Once per turn, during your Standby Phase, you must pay 500 LP (this is not optional) or this card is destroyed.

The only thing wrong was that the first effect shouldn't activate while in the middle of taking damage, and should instead be continuous. Everything else was fine I suppose.

After someone fills in for Christen57, the man himself and the owner of the other Popeye deck, steps in to make his changes, which are now live! The most notable change here is to Thimble Boatyard, now negating enemy effects and make WATER Warrior Xyz summons a lot easier! But most notably...the Spinach can now be negated! UNLESS.....
We introduce you to this deck's newest card, and its proper ace monster, Popeye, Strong To The Finish! This powerful Xyz monster synergizes well with the new abilities of Thimble Boatyard and Bluto's Bluff, and can't be destroyed by battle while all monsters you control are WATER monsters! Not only does he treat himself as Popeye The Sailor Man and negate all your opponent's high ATK monsters while Popeye The Sailor Man is attached to him as material, but he can also counter an attack by punching the enemy monster back to it's owner's hand and scaring all other monsters into face-down defence position if the attacking monster had 3500 or less ATK, all by simply detaching a material. Oh, and we forgot to tell you, he prevents Spinach from being negated in the first place!
Thank you for the changes, Christen57!
