[10/??] Brute Archetype: Pendulum Beatdown and Control

Post #1 by darkfighter17 » Sun Jan 23, 2022 6:29 pm

Introduction

Tired of exuberant special summoning and combos? Would you prefer a simpler beatdown-style? Do you miss when Pendulums were good? Introducing the Brutes: An archetype of Monsters based on high attack value. But these aren't your ordinary band of brutes...

Brutes are a control-style Pendulum deck focused on using their powerful Pendulum effects to bring out big Level 4 Monsters on Field. Each of the Pendulum Monsters share this effect: "If this card is placed in the Pendulum Zone". Just like spell cards, each of these effects are powerful and help generate or maintain advantage. On their own, each have a high attack value of 2200 ATK, yet suffer from summoning sickness: "You cannot declare an attack with this card the turn it's Normal Summoned. You must control another face-up "Brute" card to declare an attack."

These monsters also share powerful disruption or flood gate effects to help control the game. There is also a searchable boss monster that adds an additional level of disruption. Despite being a smaller archetype, this is powerful!

Overview

"Brutes" focus on abusing their Pendulum effects to generate advantage and field presence. "Brute Warrior" is the main starter for the deck, which lets you add any card in the archetype, including the Boss Monster "Elite Brute", which gives you a free omni negate every turn. In most cases, you will search the Field Spell "Brute Battleground", which allows you to bring your "Brute" Monsters out of the Pendulum Zone after you've used their effect.

"Storm Brute" is the other starter of the deck, which lets you summon any of the other Pendulum Monsters from Deck. Later in the game, you also have access to "Shadow Brute", which brings out your Brutes in GY or in the extra when placed in the Pend Zone. Shadow Brute also allows you to cheat a monster out of the extra face-up or pend zone whenever your opponent special summons a monster.

"Magma Brute" and "Mariner Brute" are your main forms of disruption, allowing you to negate a monster eff or s/t eff, respectively, provided you have another "Brute" card on Field. As Pendulum cards, they allow you to manipulate the Extra Deck by either sending monsters from deck to the extra, or adding cards from extra to hand.

"Shining Brute" lets you tribute another "Brute" card to destroy a card on Field, helping you get over problematic cards. "Support Brute", meanwhile, is an extender that protects your cards from destruction and battle, as well as boosting your monsters ATK by tributing another card.

In the early game, you want to summon "Brute Paladin", a link 2 monster with favorable link arrows. This card allows you to maintain advantage by placing new "Brute" cards in the pend zone during either player's turn. Using this card, you can bring out cards like "Storm Brute" to help you summon a Magma or Mariner for extra disruption, or you can place "Shining Brute" to pop a card during the opponent's turn. "Brute Paladin" also cures your monsters of summon sickness, as well as provide a form of destruction during battle.

"Elite Brute" is your boss monster, searchable by Brute Warrior and the Field Spell. By tributing any "Brute" monster, you can bring him out for free every turn, and have a solemn on legs with a 3k Body.

Additionally, three of the monsters (Warrior, Storm, Shining) restrict specific types of special summoning (GY + Banish, Deck, and Hand, respectively), which could slow down or stop your opponent entirely.

Combos

Note that these combos are only meant to showcase the basic strategy of the deck and how it tends to operate. Each combo will establish a basic board for you to work off of. These combos are also subject to change as this archetype develops.

Combo 1: Triple Threat

Cards Needed in Hand:
Storm Brute
Brute Battleground

Steps

1. Place "Storm Brute" in the Pendulum Zone"
2. Activate its eff to Special Summon "Magma Brute" from your Deck.
3. Activate Battleground and use its eff to bring out Storm Brute from the pend zone.
4. Link 2 for Brute Paladin
5. Use Paladin's eff to tribute Battleground and place Mariner Brute in your pend zone.
6. Activate Mariner to add Storm Brute to your hand.
7. Banish Battleground from GY to add another "Mariner Brute" from deck to hand.
8. Pend summon 2 for Mariner Brute (from hand) and Magma Brute (from Extra Deck face-up).

Ending Board:

You have three forms of disruption. Between Magma Brute and Mariner Brute, you can negate two cards (monster, and s/t respectively). Additionally, you can use Paladin's eff to place a Shining Brute to pop a card, or a Storm Brute to bring out a flood gate card in response to your opponent special summoning. During your next turn, you can use Paladin's eff again to get another copy of Brute Warrior and continue to gain advantage.

Combo 2: Big Boss

Cards Needed in Hand:
Brute Warrior
Any Level 4 "Brute" Pendulum Monster

Steps

1. Place "Brute Warrior" in the Pendulum Zone"
2. Activate its eff to add "Brute Battleground" from Deck to Hand.
3. Activate Battleground and use its eff to bring out Warrior from the Pendulum Zone.
4. Summon your other "Brute" monster
5. Link both off for "Brute Paladin"
6. Use the effect of Paladin to tribute Battleground and place "Mariner Brute" in the pend zone.
7. Use the effect of Mariner to add Warrior back to your hand.
8. Banish Battleground from your GY to add an "Elite Brute" from deck to hand.
9. Pend summon the other monster from extra deck, plus any other Brute you might have in hand.
10. Tribute the Brute you just summoned to bring out Elite Brute.

Ending Board:

You have two forms of disruption. Elite Brute is a free omni negate every turn, while Paladin lets you ditch any face-up s/t (usually your pend scale) to place another "Brute". Depending on the matchup, you can bring out "Storm Brute", which lets you bring out Magma/Mariner to disrupt your opponent, or "Shining to destroy a card. You can also bring out the other monsters to lock your opponent out of specific special summons. On your next turn, you can use Paladin again to get you another copy of Brute Warrior and continue to generate advantage.

Combo 3: The Golden Lord

Cards Needed in Hand:
Cursed Eldland
Brute Warrior

1. Activate Cursed Eldland and use its eff to add a copy of Golden Lord to hand.
2. Activate Brute Warrior to add Battleground from Deck to Hand.
3. Use Eldlich's eff to send your Battleground and itself from hand to gy and send a card on your opponent's field to GY.
4. Banish "Battleground" to add a copy of "Magma Brute" from deck to hand.
5. Activate Magma Brute and place a Brute pend monster of your choice from deck to extra deck face-up.
6. Send Cursed Eldland to GY to add Eldlich to hand (your choice to special summon)
7. Acivate Eldland in GY to send a Golden Land s/t to GY.
8. Pend summon for the Brute in extra deck (plus any Brute you might have in hand)
9. During the End Phase, banish your Golden Land S/T to set a copy of Eldlixer of Scarlet Sanguine.

Ending Board:

This allows you to get the Eldlich engine running, which helps you to maintain advantage alongside Brutes. Golden Lord synergizes well with Battleground, and Brute Paladin synergize with the Golden Lord trap cards/Cursed Eldland.

You have several options for disruption with "Magma Brute". You can bring out Mariner Brute for a S/T disruption, or flood gate your opponent with Warrior, Storm, or Shining (however be mindful with this as some of the cards might restrict you from bringing out Eldlich the Golden Lord). Additionally, you can bring out Shadow Brute and use its eff to cheat out your Magma Brute when your opponent specials a monster. During the next turn, you have access to the standard line of Eldlich plays.
