So I'm wondering if this card interaction will work to let me ritual summon this monster by tributing dark magician. Will it work, or am I misunderstanding the rules of cards treating their name as a different card's name?

Since it says it has to share only a name, and not specifically an "original" name, you would be able to tribute that card as if you were tributing "Dark Magician" as long as that card you're tributing is in one of those locations where it treats itself as Dark Magician.
