Custom Archetype: Modern Magic + Sub-Archetypes

Post #1 by Play2X » Sun Dec 19, 2021 4:51 pm

Hey, looks like someone finally played Monster Reborn and brought me back from the GY. And in my bag of surprises I have a custom archetype I already worked on back in like spring of 2020. After all that time and with a fresh mind I went over it a few times, and while there is still a lot I'm not happy with, it should be at least presentable without having to hide for another two years...

No, for the most part I don't have any pics yet, and the ones which do have one... I did those with some online generator.
And from what I've seen some like the Decklist more, some the single cards, so I just made both.
Also, I hope you take no offense with that card image. Tried to make this look appealing.

But without further ado, I present my Archetype: Modern Magic

First a few things about the cards. My basic idea was, because I really like the Dark Magician Girl, perhaps a bit too much even, to create something with her as the center but also make something new. So I had the idea of the Dark Magician Girl leaving the Monster realm and finding herself in a modern city, while retaining at least part of her power.
In terms of playstyle, I wanted something that centers around a specific monster, which you try to protect and which has a huge arsenal of spells and traps to do exactly that. When I first designed this, I had 'Something like Sky Striker' as rough idea but I feel like my archetype branched out in quite a lot of things, perhaps even too much, but I think thats for you guys to decide.

First and foremost, we have the "Modern Magician Girl" Sub-Archetype.
The Modern Magician Girl herself: https://www.duelingbook.com/card?id=1397046
And her evolved form: https://www.duelingbook.com/card?id=1397202
Aside from that she can over the course of the game further evolve in different boss-types:
Synchro Level 4: https://www.duelingbook.com/card?id=1397859
Synchro Level 7: https://www.duelingbook.com/card?id=1397946
XYZ Rank 12: https://www.duelingbook.com/card?id=1407170
(Contact-)Fusion: https://www.duelingbook.com/card?id=1398191
Ritual: https://www.duelingbook.com/card?id=1407226
The Ritual-Spell is "Modern Magical Romance - Happily Ever After"

I'm not 100% sure if I should say this here, but still: I personally get the feeling that the strength of the bossmonsters is all over the place. Especially when I consider how easy or hard some of these are to bring out. One I would consider ridiculously weak is the Ritual Summon "Modern Magician Girl the Stunning Bride". A Ritual which needs 8 cards with specific names for basically Big Eye seems rather hard. I'm still thinking if I could add something to make her stronger when these 8 cards were actually activated during the duel, and weaker if they were just discarded, but whatever.

Lets stay with the Monsters for now, the next Sub-Archetype in this Deck is the "Modern Magical Ally" Part.
Originally, this was only Starkuriboh. https://www.duelingbook.com/card?id=2869036
However, when I though of Sky Strikers as I said in the opening paragraph, as well as Magic Girl Shows like Sailor Moon,
the Girls also have their 4-5 sidekicks. And I like that Motif. So I just had to go and do this girls.
The leader of the Group: https://www.duelingbook.com/card?id=1407085
As well as Powerup Form 1: https://www.duelingbook.com/card?id=1407125
And Powerup Form 2: https://www.duelingbook.com/card?id=1407134
Finally, we have the four other girls, which support the MMG and Kirara!
Homura: https://www.duelingbook.com/card?id=1397651
Fuuka: https://www.duelingbook.com/card?id=1397706
Amane: https://www.duelingbook.com/card?id=1397680
Ruri: https://www.duelingbook.com/card?id=1397663
This one is technically no "Modern Magical Ally" card, but it is supposed to work with them as another Bossmonster.
Modern Magical Memories - The Dark Magicians: https://www.duelingbook.com/card?id=1410355

Again a litte note: I'm afraid that all of those are kinda too strong. Especially Homura, Fuuka, Amane and Ruri, as each of them can be used as a searcher or as a hand trap. Heck, I limited them to 1 because I myself perceive them as too strong, but at the same time, I want them to be at least usable with a chance of winning against real Konami-Decks, and with stuff like Ash Blossom, I felt kind of pressured into making them rather strong. Your opinion is highly valued on that matter. Aside from that, surprisingly I had the ideas for the characters first and found them to be kinda fitting personality wise to the effects I wanted to give them, like Ruri being honest and thus good with and against traps. Dunno, just me rambling.

Now, we come to a rather short part, "Modern Magical Arms", a Sub-Archetype with some equips and a searcher. Primarily these work with the Level 7 Synchro "Modern Magician Girl the Dark Magician", but also on their own.
The searcher: https://www.duelingbook.com/card?id=2872718
And then we have the Equips themselves...
Big Bang Blade: https://www.duelingbook.com/card?id=1398301
Singularity Robe: https://www.duelingbook.com/card?id=1399201
Super Nova Wand: https://www.duelingbook.com/card?id=1398293

I love myself some Equip-Spellcards, and I actually love the orignal Noble Knights, but man, Equipcards in Yu-Gi-Oh...? They have to do really good stuff to be even considered or they have to be part of a broken combo to really be used. Funnily, the cards you see here are already a nerfed version. They originally all had the effect to put them back in the deck to draw a card, because I didn't want them to brick. Oh, yes, and also: BBB and SNW both destroyed not just the targeted card, but also the cards in the zones next to them. Destroying 3 cards by just removing a card from the GY... what the F was I thinking? And even now I'm not sure about them and have them thusly limited to 1.

Next, we have the early spell and trap cards, which could be considered Modern Magician Girls 'Moveset' if you so will. "Modern Magical Arts"! A lot of these are inspired in some way from the IRL support for Dark Magician and Dark Magician Girl.
This is one I designed because in early tests I noticed that, while the early version was extremely consistent (no shit, every card searched or drew, duh), after 1 turn the hand is just empty. I really HATE this solution, but this is the only one I could come up with. Basically, Spellbook of Judgement. Well, my card is worse, because its a permanent Spellcard, but still... https://www.duelingbook.com/card?id=1399236
Burning Bombardment: https://www.duelingbook.com/card?id=1398285
Burning Flare Attack: https://www.duelingbook.com/card?id=1399246
Burning Switcharoo: https://www.duelingbook.com/card?id=1408776
Swift Burning Strike: https://www.duelingbook.com/card?id=1399211
And now some of my more problematic ones, or at least I think so...
The first one is basically another handrefill, which gets better over time.
Second Wind: https://www.duelingbook.com/card?id=1399247
The next is basically Magical Silk Hats from the anime. On Steroids?
Modern Magical Illusions: https://www.duelingbook.com/card?id=1398308
This one is... ugh. I mean, I think its a +0, but still. This one makes my boss monsters kind of too easy to summon.
Burning Formation United: https://www.duelingbook.com/card?id=1398289
This one should be okay by now, but still. I really love the name though.
Extensive Radio Calisthenics: https://www.duelingbook.com/card?id=1399239

This one I feel has the chance of being the most broken part, but I somehow also like a lot of the cards. For example Burning Flare attack. Discarding cards to target and destroy stuff should be okay considering what for cards out there. But at the same time, its a scaleable Twin Twister, which can also destroy monsters. And comparing a card to Spellbook of Judgement is already a problem on its own.

We're in the homestretch! The next ones are not in an Sub-Archetype. They are the field spells of this deck.
Modern Magical City: https://www.duelingbook.com/card?id=1399269
Modern Magical Secret Base: https://www.duelingbook.com/card?id=1410596

The one section where I think the cards are kinda weak. In fact, I feel like Modern Magical City got powercrept by Secret Base. I actually added the SS-Effect to Magical City after I did Secret Base. I am really interested what you guys have to say about these two. Clearly, its no Mystic Mine, thank god.

And last, but not least, the final Sub-Archetype, and honestly the one I find the most fun: "Modern Magical Romance", because I want to date my Magician Girl. As I said in the opening, I want to protect my girl, and this Sub-Archetype has the most elements of that idea. These cards have an intended order to play in, but of course they can be played on their own. I will write them in their intended order though.

First Kiss: https://www.duelingbook.com/card?id=1399223
Happily Ever After: https://www.duelingbook.com/card?id=1407218

That should be all, 32 cards for the Main Deck, and 8 for the Extra Deck (+1 of those Anti-Bullshit cards, but I don't want to count that one). And another 6 Normal Cards, which I made to write a bit of the lore. Honestly, because I don't play the game actively right now, I can't say anything about how effective this deck would be, I see both the possibility for too strong and too weak, based on how the cards work together. A lot of the drawing and searching is gone, so it might end up bricky. Perhaps its not really steamlined enough after all the changes. Just give me your feedback, I think I'm at a point where mulling over this by myself just doesn't cut it anymore. Thank you guys in advance!

Yo, I ain't gonna lie chief. There are just too many cards for me to even consider looking at it. There are 46 unique entrees, and that's more than 4x how many it'd take to make a playable archetype. Reading through all of them is going to take someone an entire day, and I don't think most, if any, would bother to commit that much time.

I'm open to being criticized. I'm not a perfect human being who knows when or where he fucked up, but truly willing to learn.

Are those artworks.... Picrew?
I have interest in badly designed custom cards.
You saw these cards as terrible, I saw them as ideas.

Honestly, not sure which program it was. Might be.
And @Saraak, ye, figured. This is nearly a whole deck if I use every card once. Don't worry about it.
