With most US schools out for summer vacation, it seems like a perfect time to either talk about summer vacation plans or ask people what they think you should be doing.
My plan is simple:get a job, play more competitive MtG with said funds, and become a responsible enough to ween myself off of YGO forums. Maybe get back into Vanguard in August, but that's like getting back into pot after years of sobriety

I've been there. Took me forever to get one, and that was through connections from volunteer work that I had been doing. Sadly I don't really have a lot of useful advice

Yeah that's pretty common. Whenever possible, it's better to walk in in person and ask about job openings.

but still the question remains are online job applications a step back or a step forward?

Depends on who you ask. Online applications allow employers to potentially pool from a much greater pool of potential hires and allows job hunters to put in more applications in a smaller time frame by not having to drive from location to location. Of course, a greater pool of hires means more competition, potentially to the point where employers can keep a minor position open for months waiting for someone with better qualifications
So for you it might seem like a step back, but from a hiring perspective it's definitely a step forward

How is providing a view point to an open question "splitting hairs"?
