Why do clans exist?

I've looked at this from every angle available and I still haven't come to an answer. Is it because people like to organize themselves into little cliques? Is it because everyone here is an edgy 14-year-old? Is it because people are stupid? Is it a combination of all three? This question has kept me up at night. Does Anybody know why clans exist at all?
