Are the cards in the anime just cards or actual magic?

My friends were having a discussion about whether in the anime, the cards were just cards with fancy effects or actually magic. None of us have seen the anime in years so we don't really know. What do you guys think?

Well in the jump fighting game, jump force, yugi and kaiba are able to summon monsters to actually attack and deal damage to there opponent so, idk.

Think It was a mix of holograms and magic.

It is a bit of both the cards are magical and the projections usually are holographic by the duel disk system
