Go Second Deck

Post #1 by ~ Bunniee ~ » Fri Oct 20, 2017 7:06 pm

Usually people hope to go first in a duel, but going second has its advantages as well especially if you have a deck suited for it. Going second means you get an extra card and all of your cards that destroy, tribute, or take control of your opponent's cards are live. All hand traps you open with are immediately live as well.

With struggling battle out and at 3 its the perfect time to build a deck aimed towards going second and abuse this new trap card. I've gone through a few different possible engines and decided on mermails because their in-built destruction from the atlanteans suits going second very well and is very consistent, opening with an OTK combo in more than half of the games played if its built right. There's also moray of greed which de-bricks inevitable bad hands and helps dig for struggling battle or a needed twin twisters/raigeki/dark hole. It has access to great extra deck options too like big eye to steal the monster that survived struggling battle or dracossack if you need to make a defensive play because you opened with struggling battle and cant OTK until next turn. Moulinglacia is a great card too, pushing the huge gap in card advantage even further with its delinquent duo effect. Abyss-Scale equips make for good defensive plays too, forcing your opponent to burn a card for nothing in order to do something. I didn't go too heavy on the hand traps because I don't want to have a hand that literally only does something during my opponents turn.

The side deck is a little rushed but is made with the same idea of going second in mind. The other hand traps are a no brainer, the water kaiju deals with a lot of different decks and can be used with moray of greed if it isn't needed. Forbidden chalice serves a similar purpose: turn off or bait a monster effect that's going to get in the way of your big play. Barrier statue is a great card shutting down almost everything and if not for its tiny 1000 atk it would have no down side since this deck can do fine without its normal summon a lot of the time.
